Heading into the 2024 college football season, all eyes are on the Alabama Crimson Tide as they embark on a new era without legendary head coach Nick Saban at the helm.

Kalen DeBoer, fresh off a national championship appearance with Washington, takes over a program that has consistently been a national title contender. However, oddsmakers have set Alabama’s regular season win total at just 9.5 games, the lowest preseason mark for the Tide since 2015.

How many wins will Alabama finish with in 2024? Here is our season prediction for the Crimson Tide, along with their win total and SEC odds.

Alabama’s win total is set at 9.5, with -140 odds favoring the “under”. This implies a 58.3% chance the Tide will fail to reach nine wins in DeBoer’s debut season.

Alabama 2024 Win Total Prediction

There are several factors working against Alabama in its quest for double-digit wins. The Crimson Tide suffered significant losses to the transfer portal this offseason, with key players like star safety Caleb Downs departing on both sides of the ball.

The schedule is also brutal, featuring road trips to Wisconsin, Tennessee, LSU, and Oklahoma, as well as a home tilt against Georgia. Even the Iron Bowl against Auburn can never be taken for granted.

DeBoer certainly has the pedigree to succeed at the highest level, but there are question marks surrounding the roster. The offensive line struggled last season, allowing 39 sacks, and will need to gel quickly to give new starting QB Jalen Milroe time to operate. The receiving corps and defensive secondary also face an overhaul.

While there’s never a shortage of blue-chip recruits in Tuscaloosa, the lack of experience could be costly against the high-powered offenses they’ll face in the SEC. There are six other teams in this conference with win totals of at least 8.5 in 2024.

Given the uncertainty and the gauntlet that is the SEC, I’m leaning towards the under on Alabama’s 9.5-win total. While it’s never wise to completely write off the Crimson Tide, a 9-3 or even 8-4 regular season feels more likely than reaching the 10-win threshold that has become the standard in Tuscaloosa.

Will Alabama Win the SEC?

Considering we are fading the Crimson Tide in the college football win totals, we also won’t be looking to hammer them to win the SEC in the college football conference title odds. Alabama currently sits at +650 to win the conference title, well behind favorites Georgia (+200) and Texas (+450)

Looking at the bigger picture in the SEC, Georgia remains the team to beat. The Bulldogs have the most talented roster in the conference and the stability that comes with head coach Kirby Smart and returning starting QB Carson Beck. After that, it gets interesting.

Texas looks poised to make noise in its first season in the SEC, with oddsmakers setting the Longhorns’ win total at a lofty 10.5 games. On the flip side, usual contenders like LSU and Texas A&M face question marks and tough schedules of their own.

One sleeper team to keep an eye on is Missouri. The Tigers are coming off an impressive 11-win season and return many of their key playmakers. With a win total of 9.5 and a favorable schedule that avoids Georgia, Texas, Ole Miss, and LSU, Mizzou could be a surprise contender in the SEC title race at +1800 odds.

Of course, betting against Nick Saban was always a foolish proposition. Only time will tell if that same wisdom applies to DeBoer and the new-look Crimson Tide. But in a conference as unforgiving as the SEC, the margin for error is as slim as ever.
